The business end of a salon is not as easy as you might think it would be. There is a lot of research that goes into opening the salon.
After you have opened the salon, you will have to do constant research on your competition so that you will be able to have competitive pricing and comparable products and services. Your competitors will be doing the same thing to see if they are in the same price range as you.
More than just pricing, you will need to be able to do the latest cuts and styles. The first step in that is knowing what the latest cuts and styles are. You will need to subscribe to industry magazines and checkout magazines. Leave the magazines laying around for your customers to see. They will ask about the styles they like and then you will know which ones to learn to do. That way your customers are actually doing the research for you. If you have internet access you will want to check out the website of your competitors and salons in larger cities. Before you try a new style on a customer be sure that you are able to do the cut correctly.
An essential aspect of every business salon is its advertising. You do not have to have a large budget to advertise effectively. Know your target market. If you want to appeal to every one and have services for every age group then call you local newspaper. Buy an ad that states what you offer and for how much. If you have any special services, like piercing, you will want to include a reference to them in your ad. Mention any package deal you offer. Every one likes a “buy one get one half off? or something along those lines. Special deals that are properly advertised will put people in your salon’s chairs.
A huge number of business salons fail because potential customers are not aware of their existence. A salon owner must not fall into the trap of thinking that people will find their location because of word of mouth or because of the sign out front. Proper advertising is essential in the first six months of any service related business. This is a point that can not be stressed too much. The type of advertising that you do matters very much to the success of your business salon.
The success of your business rests in your hands. You will have to be aware of the hottest new trends in the industry. Knowing what is going on in your competitors shops will give you a viable chance of survival. Advertise, advertise, advertise. Potential customers need to know that you have opened a salon. They will need to know how much your services cost. Most of all they want to know what services and products you offer. Advertise in a way that makes them want to be in your salon.
