I love my guitar. It’s a $50 piece of junk, acoustic nylon 6 string, but I love it anyway. And considering that for 30 years of my life all I ever played was the piano and never once thought about playing the guitar, that’s not too bad. And speaking of not too bad, I don’t play too bad either. And guess what? I never took ONE lesson in my whole life. How did I do it? In this article, I’ll show you exactly how I did it.
I decided early on that I didn’t want some boring teacher showing me scales and all that junk. I’d lived through that with the piano when I was a kid and didn’t want to live through it again. No thank you. So I sat down and thought to myself, “What can I do to make me want to learn the guitar?” The answer was simple. If I could just pick it up and start playing some songs that I liked, and not stupid scales, I’d enjoy learning. The problem was, what songs could I learn that would be easy enough?
Welcome to the world of rock and roll my friends. You can’t even imagine how many really great songs are no more than three chords. A perfect example is “Bad Moon Rising”. The whole thing is just D, A and G, which are three of the easiest chords to play on the guitar. So that’s what I did. Among other songs, just as easy, I learned “Bad Moon Rising” by listening to it on my stereo. It took me about 5 or 6 listens before I got it down cold.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking. That’s nice, but it’s just one song. Yeah, I know…but it gave me the confidence to go and learn others. I knew that once I learned that simple song, there was no song that I couldn’t learn as long as I practiced it enough. So that’s what I did. I learned other songs. I gradually progressed to songs of 4 and 5 chords. Today, I can play things as complicated as “Killer Queen” by Queen.
The key was doing what I enjoyed, learning songs, not scales.
In my signature, you’ll find a review of a great resource that also makes learning the guitar a ton of fun.
